Why a Serum?
I’m so glad you asked…
When I was growing up, I remember watching my mom use Noxema and Pond’s Cold Cream on her skin…period. And I gotta tell you; she looked pretty darn good. So, I’m not here to say that there’s anything wrong with that - if that’s working for you. But if you’d like to take your skin to the next level and you’re wondering what all of the hype is about serums…let’s take a couple of minutes to get educated. After all, I’d like to think that savvy Generations Skincare peeps are discerning and like to get the 411.
Before we dive in too deep…it’s important to understand the science of our skin.
First thing … You gotta Feed the Skin - The skin needs to be fed just like the rest of the body, but without the right ingredients, it won’t get what it needs. The skin needs nutrients like antioxidants, fatty acids, minerals and vitamins.
The skin has three layers:
- The epidermis, (aka the stratum corneum) the outermost layer of skin, provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone.
- The dermis, beneath the epidermis, contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands.
- The hypodermis, the deeper subcutaneous tissue is made of fat and connective tissue.
Second Thing: You Gotta Penetrate the Layers of the Skin - Many lotions are simply too thick to penetrate through the epidermis. Large molecules tend to sit on top on the skin, which isn’t a bad thing…but just imagine how much more effective it would be to get the good stuff to really sink into the skin.
Serums are made of very small molecules, so the skin absorbs them quickly and deeply.
FUN FACT: All Hyaluronics Acids (HA) are not created equally. Different molecular weights penetrate to different levels of the skin. All three Generations Skincare serums contain TWO types of hyaluronic acid. Big deal? Well yes, it is kind of a BIG DEAL. So, here’s the skinny about different weight HA:
- High Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid (HMW HA) Larger molecules remain closer to the skin surface, where they can deliver the most visible results with a shorter lifespan. It acts as a powerful humectant with anti-inflammatory effects, that delivers immediate intensive hydration to the surface layers of the skin for an instant smoothing and firming effect, forming a keratin moisturizing film on the surface of the skin, providing a short-term barrier on the skin. It will almost instantly help plump your skin. The results will be washed away with the next cleansing.
- Super Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid (SLMW HA) Smaller molecules enhance skin penetration providing smoothness and softening of the skin; also has anti-wrinkle effects and soothes irritated skin. Smaller Molecules can reach the deeper layers of the skin, therefore sustaining skin’s moisture content, giving it a longer lasting effect. This makes the skin firmer and also visibly reduces wrinkles, providing more regenerating anti-aging benefits.
Third Thing: You Gotta Lock It In! - (Not necessarily a serum secret…but nonetheless…very important to make sure that serums work to their maximum ability.) As I said earlier, the thicker, heavier, ingredients in creams form a barrier on your skin, which is great to lock in moisture.
Voila…now you know the scoop about serums!
